Kano Ready To Comply With WHO Directive On Top – Commissioner

The Kano State Government has put in place measures to ensure that all Trivalent Oral Polio Vaccines (tOPV) are removed from the cold chain and disposed off safely.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Kabir Getso, said this while briefing newsmen on the new Oral Polio Vaccine referred to as ‘bOPV’ in Kano on Monday.

“It is strictly prohibited now to immune children with tOPV in Kano State,” Getso said.

According to him, it is in compliance with the World Health Organisation’s directive to remove all tOPV from the cold chain and dispose them off safely.

The commissioner said between April 17 and May 1, 155 countries and territories around the globe would stop using trivalent Oral Polio Vaccine which protected children against the three strains of Wild Polio Virus.

“It is on record that a lot of resources have been committed into supplemental immunisation activities(SIAs) campaigns with a view to reaching all eligible children for immunisation,” he said.

He noted that the state government’s commitment and efforts in strengthening routine Immunisation over the last three years had been yielding positive results.

According to Getso, it is the key strategy for polio eradication and prevention of childhood killer diseases.

“The new innovation which is crucial, is within the context of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative via the World Health Assembly Resolution,” he said.
