Galaxy Note 6 Leak Reveals Significant Design Changes

The Galaxy Note 5 was a mistake. The productivity focused phablet suffered greatly from losing its expandable memory and removable battery, while – for the first time – it didn’t get a global release. Now Samsung looks set to fix these mistakes…

In a leak obtained by GSM Helpdesk, we learn Samsung is ready to make some major changes with the Galaxy Note 6 in both design and specifications. Let’s break them down:

Big Change #1: Edge Display

Arguably the most exciting news is Samsung is strongly considering giving the Note 6 a curved display like its Edge line-up. This would make perfect sense given Samsung builds extra functionality into its Edge panels.

More to the point though, it would prove a great visual differentiator and effectively replace the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (Samsung’s only large Edge phone) which I expect to be cancelled as well as the promising Galaxy Note Edge, which only lasted a single generation.

Big Change #2: Massive Battery

The Note range has always been known for its excellent battery life, but that took a double hit last year when Samsung reduced the capacity of the Note 5 battery as well as making it non-removable. The latter is unlikely to return, but its capacity is said to jump from 3,000mAh to a whopping 4,000mAh. That should be enough to make it one of the longest lasting phones around.

Big Change #3: 50% More RAM

The Galaxy Note 5 was one of the first phones to sport 4GB of RAM and now the Galaxy Note 6 may increase that to a massive 6GB – more than many laptops. That said the way Android gobbles RAM and TouchWiz has suffered multitasking issues, I’d argue the more the merrier. Bring it on!

And Finally…

While it isn’t the first to tout this change, GSM Helpdesk says it can also corroborate reports that the Galaxy Note 6 will have a larger 5.8-inch display.

This isn’t a major increase from the 5.7-inch panel in the Galaxy Note 5, but the interesting part is the phone itself is not expected to get any bigger. Instead Samsung will slim down the bezels, a move that would prove very popular.

Is all this too good to be true? Given Samsung has no track record whatsoever in being able to keep the details of its new phones secret, I’d argue we should be cautiously optimistic. Furthermore these are the sorts of upgrades Samsung will need if the Galaxy Note 6 is to stand toe-to-toe with Apple’s upcoming, and increasingly controversial, iPhone 7 Pro
