2016 French Open: Women's bracket, schedule and scores

Serena Williams picked up her first title in nine months and she'll try to win another at Roland Garros, this time without Maria Sharapova in the fold.

While the men's bracket was shaken up by the loss of Roger Federer, who will miss his first Grand Slam since 1999, the women's bracket won't have Maria Sharapova, a longtime mainstay of the women's singles rankings. Sharapova, 29, is awaiting news on the length of her suspension from testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January.

How much time she'll miss is totally up in the air. Sharapova says she's been taking meldonium since 2006 for a magnesium deficiency and irregular EKG results, but it was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited drug list on Jan. 1. There is some thought that meldonium may take longer to leave the body than WADA anticipated and some suspended athletes have successfully argued for their suspensions being lifted.

But Sharapova will still be on the sidelines watching when the French Open gets underway on Sunday. As usual these days, Serena Williams is the top seed on the women's side and the favorite to win it all. She picked up her first title in nine months when she won in Rome last weekend, which could be huge for her. She's the defending champion.
