Ebonyi: Three “injured” as who is better between Ronaldo and Messi debate turns violent

The argument over who is better between Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi claimed another set of casualties on Saturday.

This time it was in a bar in the Kpirikpiri area of Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

Ronaldo was on duty, Saturday, with his national team as they took on Croatia in a second round match of the ongoing Euro 2016 competition.

Marshal, a Ronaldo supporter and Obinna, a Messi supporter were amongst the crowd who saw the match at the bar.

Before the match, the duo had reportedly argued over who was superior between the two super soccer stars.

Their disagreement escalated when Ronaldo ochestrated the lone goal that secured Portugal a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Ronaldo’s shot was parried into Quaresma’s path for the goal.

In celebration of the goal, Marshal reportedly rushed to Obinna screaming “I told you, I told you Ronaldo is the best”.

In reaction, Obinna pushed Marshal and a fight ensued between the two.

The fight would have ended after others in the bar intervened, but Marshal’s friends felt Obinna’s friends sided with him.

A free-for-all then ensued.

Simon, the bar owner, reportedly had to invite people from outside the bar to regain control of the situation.

But by that time, three persons were already injured.

The duo are known to always argue over which club was better between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“I banned them from coming to my shop,” Simon said adding that it was their first visit since the competition started.

“It took the intervention of others inside the shop for me to allow them, as I was sure that their acrimony toward each other goes beyond Ronaldo and Messi supremacy,” he said.

The state police spokesman, DSP George Okafor, said the incident was not officially reported.
