New York City Mayor Names Street In Honor Of Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali’s incomparable legacy will be temporarily immortalized beside New York City’s most famous arena.
On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio officially announced that the street adjacent to Madison Square Garden, West 33rd Street, will be temporary renamed as Muhammad Ali Way to honor the late boxing legend and humanitarian.
The renowned venue served as host to eight of Ali’s matches including his much talked about “Fight of the Century” bout against Joe Frazier in 1971 – where Frazier won in 15 rounds via a unanimous decision.
"Ali never backed down from a fight in or outside the ring," de Blasio told the Associated Press. "Because The World’s Most Famous Arena hosted some of Muhammad Ali’s greatest fights within the ring, including the 'Fight of the Century' against Joe Frazier in 1971, he deserves this naming honor and more."
Following the announcement, Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali expressed her gratitude on Instagram for her father’s recognition.
A Muslim funeral prayer service will be held at Freedom Hall on Thursday in Ali’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, followed by a memorial service on Friday.
