Pregnant women advised to use hospitals

Pregnant women in Lagos State have been advised to stop patronising unregistered traditional birth attendants for child delivery services.

The Medical Director of the Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital, Dr Adetola Odufuwa, according to a statement on Tuesday, stated this during a familiarisation visit to the hospital by the Sole Administrator of Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, Label Raji.

Odufuwa said, “I am concerned about numerous cases of child delivery  complications emanating from birth attendant centres which could result in maternal and child fatalities.

“I urge Lagos State residents, especially pregnant women, to access medical services before their health issues deteriorate into emergency cases.”

The medical director also implored the sole administrator to create a forum where health workers from the hospital could educate residents to embrace family planning in order to raise a family that could be easily managed to avert ripple effects on the society in future.

 “The challenges facing the hospital are inadequate bed spaces, inadequate offices for workers, inadequate car park and poor illumination of the hospital road at night,” the medical director added.

The council boss, Raji, commended Odufuwa and the management of the hospital, adding that the purpose of his visit was to identify the challenges being faced by the hospital and also determine areas of collaboration which could alleviate such challenges.

He promised to organise a forum to address residents of the council area and also provide an ambulance  for the hospital whenever it was needed.

He said, “Some offices in the hospital complex will be expanded within three months to create more offices. I will also write to the appropriate quarters for the use of the stadium beside the hospital for a car park.”
