Manchester United set to appoint Jose Mourinho as manager

Despite winning the FA Cup 2-1 over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Manchester United is set to replace manager Louis van Gaal with ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, according to BBC Sport.

The club plans on announcing the move early next week.

Mourinho has been out of a job since getting sacked by Chelsea in December, but he has been linked with the Man U job for months. Mourinho watched his Chelsea team struggle to retain the same form that saw them win the Premier League in the 2014-15 season, in what became one of the worst title defenses in league history.

Manchester United is in desperate need of a tune-up as well, having missed out on the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. 

Mourinho will head to Manchester with a lofty resume. He won three league titles in his two spells with the Blues. He also led Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League victories in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

Yet, the 53-year-old Portuguese manager dubbed "The Special One" was run out of Chelsea this season after players were fed up with his inability to relate to the team, and fans were tired of his excuses and stubbornness.

The Red Devils have failed to nail down a permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after leading the team for more than 26 years.
