Police corporal kills, buries inspector

A police corporal, Mr. Daramola Tosin, attached to the Ekiti Police Division of Kwara State Police command, has been dismissed from service for allegedly killing and burying a Police Inspector, Mr. Lateef Shuaib, and then withdrew N300,000 from the dead officer’s account.

It was learned that Daramola Tosin shot the late Inspector with his AK-47 rifle, while the latter was defecating in the bush and buried him near Osi Police Station in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports obtained in Ilorin, late Shuaib’s sister, Sherifat Hammed, reported on May 10 to the Osi Police Station that her brother had not been seen since May 6.

It was gathered that Hammed also reported that she suspected Tosin, as her late brother had told her that when he was sick, he gave the suspect his ATM card, based on trust, to be withdrawing money from his account on his behalf.

Vanguard learned that Hammed, in the report, said Tosin dishonestly started transferring money from Shuaib’s account without the knowledge of the late Inspector, to the tune of N300,000.

Docked

Kwara State Police Command arraigned him yesterday before a magistrate’s court in Ilorin. The police prosecutor, Mr. James Odaodu, told the presiding magistrate, Mr. Nurudeen Adeyanju, that the offence was capital in nature, adding that it was not bailable.

While pleading with the court to remand the accused in prison custody, the prosecutor said the offences were culpable homicide, breach of trust and theft, contrary to Section 221, 312 and 289 of Penal Code.

Adeyanju did not take the accused’s plea, but said the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter as it involved a murder.

According to him, it should be handled by a High Court. The magistrate, however, ordered that Tosin be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Mandalla, Ilorin, and adjourned the case till June 21 for further mention.

Police Commissioner reacts

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sam Okaula, had earlier stated that when the matter was brought to his attention, he ensured thorough investigation into the matter.

He said the corporal later confessed to committing the crime and he subsequently dismissed him.

Okaula said: “We do not condone crime. We go after anyone, including members of the force, who go out of their way to commit crime.

“We investigate them and prosecute them if found culpable and ensure we gain conviction. This particular dastardly act will not be an exception definitely.”
