The 15th China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF)

Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China

Statement by UNIDO, 09 October 2017

Your Excellency, Mr. Wang Jiangping,

Vice-Minister of Industryand Information Technology of PRC

Your Excellency, Mr. Chen Liangxian,

Vice-Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province,

Mr Adbullah Al Saleh, Under-secretary of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Economy of UAE

Distinguished Guests,

Dear Colleagues,

It is my privilege to standhere today at the opening ceremony of the 15th China International SME Fair. On behalf of Director General LI Yong, I want to express UNIDO’s deep gratitude to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province for the kind invitation to co-host this prestigious event.

Just a year ago, I was addressing the same distinguished audience as Head of the UNIDO delegation to CISMEF 14. We had at the time extensive discussions with MIIT and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province towards a long-term association of UNIDO to the China International SME Fair. These discussions were very constructive indeed and I am very glad that UNIDO has since becomean official part of CISMEF.

As a UN agency dedicated to the promotion of inclusive and sustainable development, UNIDO delivers technical assistance to over a hundred countries around the globe. Our efforts support SDG9 “industry, infrastructure and innovation” but also SDG13 “climate action”, SDG7 “energy access” and others.

Our partners are typically small and medium-size enterprises around the world, whom we are helping to grow and prosper in a way that respects the ecosystem and benefits the communities in which they operate. The best, most convincing advice we can provide comes of course from SMEs that have already shown their ability to adapt to the demands of international trade, to export their products or successfully face the competition of imported substitutes on domestic markets, and to harness to their advantage the opportunities created by the new industrial revolution.

It is very opportune therefore that the United Arab Emirates is the guest of honour at the 15th edition of CISMEF. Together with the UAE, UNIDO has been holding the Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit (GMIS) where the future of manufacturing and the impact of the new industrial revolution are discussed amongst experts around the world, and successful experiences are shared and quickly translate into concrete applications in other developing countries.

As a similar major event with international outreach we look forward to fruitful exchanges at CISMEF 2018, and to actionable recommendations that we can help further disseminate through platforms such as GMIS, and through our network of technical assistance programmes.

I thank you for your attention.
